The chapter explains that atoms can achieve stability through sharing or transfer of electrons, with the resulting chemical bond providing a lower-energy, more stable arrangement.

Important Laws & Concepts

1. Law of Conservation of Mass

In a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed. The total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products, provided nothing enters or escapes the system.

2. Law of Constant Proportions

A chemical compound always contains its constituent elements in a fixed ratio by mass, irrespective of its source or method of preparation.

For example, purified water always contains hydrogen and oxygen in a 1:8 mass ratio

3. Dalton’s Atomic Theory

Dalton proposed his atomic theory in 1808. The chapter uses it to explain why mass is conserved and why compounds have fixed compositions.
